A doctor majoring in building science and technology from Tsinghua University as well as senior engineer and lighting designer, Rong Haolei is the head of Tsinghua Tongheng Planning & Design Institute Co Ltd's Department of Lighting Planning & Design.

His main research focus is urban lighting-urban lighting planning, architecture and landscape lighting design. He is also one of the main compilers of the National Standard on Urban Lighting.

In addition to authoring a series of papers, Rong has also aided in the translation of some books.

Rong was in charge of some of the largest lighting projects, including the lighting for the Tian’anmen Gate Tower and the National Museum of China.
