Reconstruction design and regulatory detailed planning of Donghe district’s Beiliang shanty town, Baotou, Inner Mongolia autonomous region (Tsinghua Tongheng Planning and Design Institute Co Ltd)
Beiliang shanty town in the city of Baotou, Inner Mongolia autonomous region is one of the largest shanty towns in China. Its reconstruction has drawn a lot of attention from the country’s leaders and mainstream media.
The planning was made not only to improve the basic life quality after reconstruction. By reviving its cultural as the starting point, it has conducted documentary and on-site research to explore the historical and cultural connotations. It was designed to distinctively link Beiliang’s history and cultural resources with its patterns of space.
The design and regulatory detailed planning won the best overall prize at the 2013 Habitat Classic Architectural Planning and Design Competition
