Prioritizing people-oriented and sustainable development, the detailed construction planning of Zhongguancun west area in Beijing features the first underground traffic tunnel system in China. The planning includes new methods such as new underground comprehensive tunnels and ultralow temperature ice storage for the area's water supply. 

Moreover, a market mechanism was introduced into governmental land development for the first time at the planning stage. The planning won the second prize of design and planning awarded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in 2003, the first prize of the 11th Best Design Projects in Beijing in 2003 and the second prize of Beijing Science and Technology Award.
