Made-in-China security equipment at Rio Olympic Games

Installation and testing of security inspection equipment manufactured by Nuctech Company Limited, a member company of Tsinghua Holdings, began at the Rio Olympic Games’ Maracana Stadium on July 11.  

Nuctech’s security inspection equipment will be used in the Games’ four arenas. All the security equipment used in the Maracana and Deodoro arenas was supplied by Nuctech. Some of the equipment used in the Barra and Copacabana arenas was made in China, and was suggested by Chen Yongjian, general-manager of Nuctech’s Brazilian subsidiary.

The fact that different sports have different venues means that major sporting events such as the Olympic Games have stricter requirements for security inspection equipment. Security products must be adapted to different working environments, according to Chen, who took beach volleyball as an example. The inspection equipment must be installed on Copacabana Beach’s soft sand with the risk of seawater corrosion.

On July 11, technical staff of Nectech from China and the Brazilian company were working intensely on the installation and testing at Maracana Stadium. In addition, Nuctech will organize technical training for 60 security personnel at the stadium, who will then train other staff, according to the company’s Brazilian engineer. It is estimated that over 2,000 personnel will operate the inspection equipment manufactured by Nuctech during the games.

The security of large sports events is always a concern. Brazil has launched the largest ever protection program for the Olympic Games. A total of 88,000 people, including police, fire-fighters and the army, are responsible for the games’security. 

The Olympics are the third large Brazilian event for which Nuctech has provided security inspection services, the others being the Pan American Games in 2007 and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Chen attributed Nuctech’s becoming a security equipment supplier to the Rio Games to the superior quality of products made in China, the efficient executive ability of Chinese enterprises and local recognition of Chinese brands.
