Tongfang Microelectronics Co Ltd is one of the four suppliers of chip modules specialized for use in Chinese second-generation ID cards. It undertook the R&D of second-generation ID card chips modules by cooperating with the Institute of Microelectronics, Tsinghua University. In 2003, it finished all steps necessary to finalize production and in January, 2004 it started supplying the Ministry of Public Security. 

The chip module of Chinese second-generation ID cards is the first extensive electronic certificate project in the world. It is an important informatization project with profound influence on Chinese residents. The project won first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and second prize of the Beijing Science and Technology Award.
