Xu Jinghong, Chairman of Tsinghua Holdings and Co-Chair of Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2017, spoke at the Press Conference: Meet the Co-Chairs of the Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2017 on June 27.

Here is the transcript of his thoughts on Achieving Inclusive Growth in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

“I believe technological advancement is what makes today’s era a remarkable one, and also a thought-provoking one. Technology is advancing so quickly and yet people, no matter where they are, experience all kinds of anxieties and confusion regarding the future.

In the midst of explosive technological development, we start to question: Does technological development spell disaster or good news for us? What kind of changes will it bring to our societal structure? Will it drive even wider gaps amongst people or will it benefit us? Will we see greater consensus between economics and politics or will we see bigger separation?

I think this is why here at this meeting. We must emphasize inclusive growth, which means balancing human happiness with technological, economic, and social development. Therefore, I believe balance is at the core of inclusive growth. To achieve sustainable development in the right direction, therefore, is an important mission for this year’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions.

My company, Tsinghua Holdings, is a champion in technology services and technological innovation. We are one of the biggest corporate incubators in the world, and we are building more incubators still. We also think education is very important. XuetangX.com, for instance, is our MOOC platform which has received over 7 million users from more than 100 countries since its establishment around three years ago. This platform produces more graduates than Tsinghua University has produced in the last 100 years! It goes to show that technology will play an increasingly important role in education to benefit more people.

I also want to consider how this meeting can bring universities, scientists, business entrepreneurs, and political leaders together to push the world towards a better future and bring happiness for mankind. I hope today’s meeting will create new insights in this area.”
