The Chinese Academy of Engineering announced the results of the 2019 academician election on November 22. Zhuang Weimin, president of the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University, a subsidiary of Tsinghua Holdings Human Settlement Construction Group, was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Zhuang Weimin, born in 1962, earned a bachelor's degree in architecture from the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University in 1985 and a doctorate in 1992. Zhuang is a professor and the dean of the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University as well as the chief architect and president of the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University.

Zhuang is the 2019 Liang Sicheng Architecture Prize winner and was nominated as China Design Master by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in 2008. He is also a Class A registered architect of China, vice-chairman of the Architectural Society of China, council member of the UIA and co-director of UIA Professional Practice Commission.

Zhuang has been working in architectural design and theoretical research for decades and was the first to propose the theoretical method system of architectural planning and post-evaluation in China. He has developed the platform for pre-planning and post-evaluation operation processes, principles and decisions.

He is the architect of almost 100 important projects in China, including the Reconstruction of the National Art Gallery, the Shooting Range Hall for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and the National Convention and Exhibition Center (co-designer). He has won a number of important prizes, such as the Gold and Silver Medal for Excellent Engineering Design and three international prizes.

He is the author of a series of academic publications, including the Architectural Planning and Design and Post-evaluation in China.

Zhuang won the First Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award issued by the Ministry of Education in 2017 and the First Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Architectural Society of China in 2019.

He also won the Architectural Education Award of the Architectural Society of China and was awarded inclusion in 100 Contemporary Chinese Architects.
